The message greeting me as I walked into the white terra-cotta Bottleworks Hotel was an accurate description. “This must be the place,” were the words printed in welcome on the entry carpet.

A skittish elephant, some loud noises and a five-day rampage put the Hoosier city of Wabash on the front pages of newspapers around the nation eight decades ago.

Ready to visit beautiful Mars? Nope, not the planet named after the Roman god of war. This Mars is the newest cruise ship in the Viking fleet.

The new Viking Mars was officially named by her ceremonial godmother, Lady Fiona Carnarvon, the Countess of Carnarvon. When Justin Gillespie saw the dilapidated canal worker house, he wasn’t sure the structure could be saved. However, Justin valued the history of his Hoosier hometown and decided to undertake the massive renovation project.

“I grew up here in Lagro and didn’t want to see these historic buildings destroyed,” he says. “A lot of blood, sweat and tears have gone into this but I’m proud of how we saved something that could have been bulldozed down and forgotten about.” Read more...

Volendam Temporary Home for Ukrainian Refugees Extended Through Sept. 14

The city of Rotterdam has extended its charter agreement for Holland America Line’s Volendam to house Ukrainian refugees through Sept. 14.

“We are sorry for the inconvenience this will cause to guests booked on Volendam through the summer,” Beth Bodensteiner, chief commercial officer of Holland American Line, said in a news release. “We appreciate their continued understanding as we work with the city of Rotterdam on this important mission.” Read more...
