Cruise Ship Artist: Peter Max
Art is always a focus on cruises. In fact, many ships might as well be art museums with the hundreds of thousands of dollars worth of orginal works that hang throughout cruise ships today. Add in the art auction, and sometimes a ship can almost feel like an episode of Gallery Girls.
The Norwegian Breakaway is taking this to a new level when she debuts in 2013. The ship which will sail out of New York will feel like New York, right down to the art. They are serious about making this ship an extension of the city. The Rockettes will be the ship’s Godmother and will make regular performances aboard ship. Two Broadway production shows on every sailing. Even dining will have New York flair with the Manhattan Room main dining room and the Cagney’s steakhouse getting a New York feel.
And it’s not just the inside art that will be all New York, the outside art will too. Norwegian Cruise Line commissioned pop artist and New York legend Peter Max to paint the hull. Here’s a video where Max talks about his process.
We’re fans of Peter Max, and the design for the hull. Although that isn’t a universal opinion. But no matter what people think about the work, one thing is clear. This ship will be unmistakably New York City, inside and out.
