The Most Dangerous Airport Becomes the Most Amazing Cruiseport
We don’t normally talk about the physical ports here. After all, a destination isn’t normally defined by the building travelers pass through on the way in or out of a city. But the story behind Hong Kong’s new cruise terminal is too excellent not to share. As of this week, what used to be one of the world’s most dangerous airports has become one of the most amazing cruise ports.
Kai Tak airport was the stuff of legend. One of the few major airports in the world to be basically directly in the downtown area, on many days, jumbo jets would seemingly dart between skyscrapers with sharp 45 degree turns over the core downtown area and land on a runway sticking out in the sea. It was a nerve-wracking and exhilarating experience for passenger and pilot alike… and sometimes even for planespotters near the runway!
Starting this week, the old airport which was shuttered 15 years ago has sprang back to life, as one of the most modern cruise terminals in the world. It’s still being built, but when finished, the Kai Tak cruise port will be capable of holding the Oasis of the Seas and the Allure of the Seas at the same time! It’s starting small though, with the Mariner of the Seas calling on the port as the first ship to visit Kai Tak this week.
The terminal does look stunning though. Enjoy this video of what will be a cruising nexus to the 50 million potential Chinese cruise travelers in the years to come.
