Ever thought you’d like to name one of North America’s largest land animals? This one, of course, is just a baby but fans are being invited to give a moniker to the cutie.

Holland America Line is inviting folks to name a rescued orphan moose calf in partnership with Alaska Wildlife Conservation Center. (AWCC). From now through June 23, name suggestions can be submitted on a designated post on Holland America Line’s official Facebook and Instagram pages.

The top 10 suggested names will be selected by team members from Holland America Line and AWCC. The chosen 10 names will be posted on Holland America Line’s Facebook and Instagram pages and fans can vote for their favorite. The winning name will be announced in early July.

“Holland American Line has been exploring Alaska longer than any other cruise line and we are deeply committed to supporting AWCC in its conservation efforts to protect Alaska’s wildlife,” Kacy Cole, chief marketing officer for Holland American Line, said in a press release.

AWCC takes in injured and orphaned animals, providing them with spacious enclosures and quality animal care. In addition to teaming up to name the rescued moose calf, Holland America Line and AWCC are partnering to help preserve and protect Alaska’s wildlife.

“We are grateful to partners like Holland America Line that help AWCC continue the work we do to protect and preserve Alaska’s wildlife,” Sarah “Howie” Howard, executive director of AWCC, said in a press release.

“Most orphan animals that come into our facility are given a name to help foster a bond not only with our staff, but with our visitors as well,” Howard said. “We can’t wait to see what name is chosen by Holland America Line’s fans.”

The cruise line gives guests the opportunity to view Alaska wildlife responsibly from its ships and on shore excursions and Cruisetours. Holland America Line is the only cruise line offering moose encounters this summer at the AWCC facility.

Moose encounters allow visitors to get up close and personal with the resident moose. Holland America Line guests can feed the moose right out of their hands while AWCC’s staff shares information about moose diet, behavior and wild counterparts.

An adult moose can range in size from 800 pounds for a small adult female to 1,600 pounds for a large adult male, and can be up to almost 6 feet tall. Moose are often easily recognized by their antlers, carried only by the males. In the wild, moose rarely live more than 16 years.

“Our guests take an Alaska cruise to see wildlife in the region, and moose are part of ‘Alaska‘s Big Five,’” Cole said. “We are excited to give our fans the opportunity to participate with the Alaska community in a fun and meaningful way.”

For those curious, the largest North American animal in body mass is the American bison. The heaviest wild bull ever recorded for a plains bison weighed 2,800 pounds, while there have been bulls estimated to weigh 3,000 pounds.
