Hapag-Lloyd Cruises has announced plans to modernize its two luxury ships, Europa and Europa 2, in 2007, continuing the company’s 135-year tradition of innovation in luxury travel.

“Progress, for us, means drawing on our experience to understand what makes our ships distinctive, while at the same time having the courage to change what is right to change,” Isolde Susset, managing director of Hapag-Lloyd Cruises, said in a press release.

Europa 2 will enter a shipyard in Singapore in January 2027, followed by Europa in Bremerhaven, Germany, in the fall.

Planned upgrades to Europa 2 include:

Suites: Approximately 250 suites will receive refreshed color schemes and décor.

Public Spaces: The Atrium and Piano Bar will be modernized.

Dining: The Sakura and Elements specialty restaurants will receive design updates, with additional enhancements planned for Elements.

Technical Improvements: Maintenance and technology upgrades will also be completed.

Details of Europa’s renovations are still being finalized and will be announced in the coming months.

Both ships have consistently earned top honors from Insight Guides Cruising & Cruise Ships, formerly the Berlitz Cruise Guide, including recognition in 2025. Europa 2 also recently received a Kreuzfahrt Guide Award for Service & Comfort.

The upgrades reflect the company’s commitment to maintaining its high standards of luxury while introducing thoughtful improvements to the guest experience.

Hapag-Lloyd Cruises is the leading luxury and expedition cruise brand in German-speaking markets. Its five small ships are the only fleet worldwide awarded the highest five-star rating by Insight Guides 2025.

Since 2020, the brand has been part of TUI Cruises GmbH, a joint venture between TUI AG and Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd. The entire fleet is now fully bilingual, offering all sailings in both English and German.
